of body weight issues, long gowns and stress
It's the season for long gowns... in our company. It's the time of the year that I find myself in the drama of finding that nice fitting gown.
Amid the summer heat, we all troop to a formal event in our long gowns, high heels and glossy make-up. We usually arrive at the venue at high noon.

Because we are working committees. Nah, we're not awardees. We honor the hardworking men and women of our sales force. We show our respect and appreciation by showing up at our best. Although the program doesn't start until 5pm, we show up way too early because...
Year after year, we follow a theme. Be it in color or accessories. Through the years, the look I have paraded are quite nostalgic, funny and downright cheesy. Thrown in is the annual wish to lose a few pounds to look better in photographs.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010, my teammates and I consecutively missed this event because we were pulling an all-nighter just across the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) setting up the venue (and other logistics) for the Leadership Day, slated the following day. Hence, no photo and no gown.
In 2011, I thought I'd wear a cocktail dress. Am not sure if we were allowed but it was my first time to be a non-committee member. I felt lost. The culture of being a "hired help" during a gala night is so well engrained in me, I didn't know how to enjoy the evening sans the rushing from one end of the ballroom to the other.

| 2012: As I age, I feel that I look better except that I've grown bigger. Damn, hypothyroidism. It sucks. And sedentary lifestyle, too. Bummer. |
There are exactly 14 days left before the event. I checked my gown box last night. Looked at them. Felt the textures on my hand. I tried to remember the memory each evoked.
I even tried wearing each of them to no avail. The old ones do not fit anymore. It left me scrambling for a peg and an emergency call to my dressmaker. I had this notion that I will just put on a repeat thinking that as a non-celebrity, am entitled to do so. What utter madness!
It maybe permitted but genetics er lifestyle forbids me so. Now, if only am 40 pounds lighter. Am sure I could wiggle in that powder blue gown of mine.
Wishful thinking aside, am now off to the fabric store. Stress -- do not hound me!

Happy Valentine
This is not my personal valentine story. It is a collective valentine celebration of people who works in one of the coolest companies on earth. We, at Avon have a penchant for celebrating public holidays, the Avon way.
Today is no exception. We were in for a treat! Paolo Santos (@misteracoustic on twitter) serenaded everyone with his trademark croon. When it was first announced via email that he would be our guest, I was skeptical. I thought there wasn't anything exciting about it.
But I love 'Midnight over Paris,' so I went up to our 10th floor hallway to listen/watch. We arrived at the floor packed with so many associates. So, we crept our way there at the front where we had a good vantage view of the guests.
The misteracoustic had me at the first notes of 'Get here'; we hummed along. Then it hit me, his kind of music were the ones on heavy rotation when I was in my 20s. Now, I hardly turn on the radio so I am clueless about new songs, new artists. And am hopeless with lyrics! We had to Google 'Moonlight over Paris' so we can sing along out-of-tune. Ha ha.
Going back to Paolo, he didn't disappoint with his performance. He played with panache. He entertained us so well, we more clamoring for more.
Thank you, Paolo for a mini-concert. We had a blast.
My Avon valentine got even better. We were given this tasty cupcakes as a treat. And of course, this morning I received a single rose. I can't properly thank the person who gave it because there was no note. But whoever you are, am sure you're a good friend. So, thank you. Happy valentine to you, too.
And this yummy bucket-full of chocolates from Dawn with a beautiful hand illustration of my name and an icon of me -- java cup!
Dear Avon Philippines, thank you for making this day an awesome corporate valentine. We feel the love. You rock, Avon! This barrio girl is in valentine heaven!

Make Out Red
I rarely go gaga over a lipstick. Excuse me, lippy. It seems like this is the hip term, nowadays. How does Make Out Red sound to you? When we were handed out samples of the new Avon Lipsticks called Totally Kissable, I eagerly ripped out its shrink wrap, twisted it and glide it on my lips.
I have this uncanny ability to put color on my lips without the aid of a mirror. I just sort of feel my way around my lips. And so when that first glide felt like a smooth butter, I had to see the result.
In the semi-darkness of the Mandarin Oriental's ballroom under yellow lights, I borrowed a friends mirror and gasped. Whoa. It's a lovely shade of red. Make Out Red, indeed. Just right for the occasion to lip lock. Or amps up the probability of it.

Raffle Giveaway a la Barrio
Where does the time go? Julia Fordham sings. And this barrio girl asked.
A year ago, I've decided to take blogging seriously. The decision is predicated by my desire to practice and harness my writing skills. And to "immortalize" my adventures and mishaps in the big city. Being the barrio girl that I am, I feel that most of the time I play a pretend game of adult-sophisticate cosmopolitan woman.
Yet, when you peel off the veneer, you'd see that am still very much attached to my roots. I have an insane fear of strangers and commuting. I've been in the city for six years now and yet I cannot go on my own outside of Makati.
I haven't been to Divisoria. I don't know where 168 is. Or Tutuban. I just know that these are shopping havens for the serious shopper. But I've been to Binondo, for food trips.
In spite of my deficiencies, I celebrate my life in the big city. I love exploring restaurants, the parks in the city and the shops. Yes, I know where the relevant shops are. Mind you, am not a shopaholic. I just love window shopping.
These things offered me enough reason to grow roots in the city even if it meant turning my back from the comforts of home.

Skin Care Alert!
They say that great skin is the foundation of beauty. Lucky for those who have been born with good genes they're predisposed to having soft, smooth and supple skin. For the rest of us, we need help, every now and then.
In my adolescent years, I only worried on the occasional zit or the threat of it. My aunt, who didn't know better, made me use astringent on my skin. What I distinctly remember is that whenever I do use it, my skin gets that tight feeling and it becomes flaky. Other than the usual oiliness that I have to combat, I had a relatively worry-free adolescent years.
When you're in your early 20's, your skin is at it's peak -- glowing and healthy. But the smog and pollution, plus stress can take a toll. It dulls the skin and all the early signs of aging show up. When untreated, you'll just be aghast at the sight staring at you in the mirror.
Because I am one person who doesn't want to fuss so much about my skin, I keep my regimen to a minimum. I just do a basic skin care program: cleanse, tone and moisture. Then, there's the barely frequent specialization on problem areas such as the eyes for crows feet and under eye circles, laugh lines along the sides of the mouth and worry lines on the forehead and even that squint line in between the brows.
I also want to get value for money. Good thing I work for a beauty company. At least I get a little more information on what works and what doesn't. All these years, I have come to conclude that my skin responds well to the Anew line of Avon. It's a high-tech line of skin care products that delivers the result of professional dermatological procedures at the comfort of one's home and at a fraction of their cost.
And because I am from Avon, I get to try any new line that gets introduced. And because I am in a perpetual search for a product that costs less but will help delay or turn back the time, I submit myself to road test each one that comes along. My vote, hands down, goes to Anew Rejuvenate.
I believe it's what keeps me looking younger than most of my contemporaries.
